Virtual Machine / VMware Data Recovery

Virtual data recovery starts with the storage layer

Virtual machines depend on underlying physical or network storage. When a VM, virtual disk or datastore becomes inaccessible, the recovery path depends on whether the problem is in the virtual data, the file system, the storage system or the underlying media.

Information useful for assessment

  • Virtualisation platform and affected virtual machines.
  • Where the virtual disks or datastore are stored.
  • Underlying RAID, NAS, SAN or local storage configuration.
  • Symptoms and error conditions.
  • Recent storage, snapshot, migration or recovery actions.
  • Any backup or replica information available.

Avoid unnecessary changes

Where recovery is required, avoid repeatedly writing to the affected datastore or recreating virtual disks over the original storage. Preserve the source storage and record the steps already taken.

Assessment process

  1. Contact DataRecovery.lk and describe the virtual environment and affected storage.
  2. Provide the relevant storage and configuration information.
  3. The case is assessed for recovery options.
  4. An assessment and quotation are provided.
  5. Recovery work proceeds only if appropriate and agreed.

Scope clarification

The service is focused on data recovery from affected virtual storage. It is not presented as a general virtualisation support, systems-administration or cybersecurity incident-response service.
